This post is not necessarily an original post for this blog, however it includes many items that I have been adding to the Colorado Springs Urban Intervention blog in the past month. Colorado Springs Urban Intervention is a fund through the Colorado Springs non-profit, Pikes Peak Community Foundation, that a few of us created as a mechanism to handle the financial intake and out take of Better Block Pikes Peak. It has certainly evolved, and continues to evolve, in becoming a major player in Colorado Springs to transform the built environment at the base of America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak.

The following are some of the highlights and useful data from Better Block Pikes Peak:

Better Block Pikes Peak Progress – July Meeting

Posted in Events, Streetscapes, Urbanism with tags , , , on July 10, 2012 by John Olson

Below are some photos from today’s Better Block Meeting. Better Block is planned to be held on Pikes Peak Avenue between Nevada and Tejon in the heart of Downtown Colorado Springs. The demonstration will occur from noon on Friday, September 21 to noon on Saturday, September 22.

The ideas and creativity that came from the group today and in past exchanges are simply amazing. This group of people are an incredible asset to the City, that for the most part, is untapped potential. I am honored to be a part and am looking forward to getting a grand vision on the ground. Conceptual sketches will be available soon on this website of what is the overall vision for the street that in a lot of ways, defines Colorado Springs.

If you would like to be involved with the Better Block Pikes Peak, we would love to have you play a part. The vitality of a City is dependent on all types of people regardless of age, profession, or any other pigeonhole that you think that you might fit into. Better Block is very similar in this way as well, so please do not be shy. Every type of person has something to offer to the success, so please join us.

From a ‘Good Block’ to a ‘Better Block’ in Downtown Colorado Springs

Posted in Events, Urban Planning and Design, Urbanism with tags , , on June 9, 2012 by John Olson

Several advocates in Colorado Springs met on June 7 to begin the conversation of a Better Block in Colorado Springs.(For more information on what a Better Block is, see BetterBlock.org or a local example near Downtown Denver, Better Block Jefferson Park).

The decision was made to go a little different from the traditional Better Block projects, in doing the demonstration on a block that was not deteriorated. We chose to take on a block that is/was ‘good’, but in the heart of Downtown Colorado Springs. The block will be Pikes Peak Avenue between Nevada and Tejon.

For those of you familiar with Colorado Springs, you will note that this is at the nexus of downtown and perhaps wonder why here? The idea is that by showing what could happen here, could demonstrate what could happen all over Downtown Colorado Springs. The individual ideas generated and components of this Better Block could be applied throughout the region.

This location, and really Colorado Springs as a whole, has one of the best natural environments directly west of the City, Pikes Peak. Meanwhile the built environment of the city has grown to be automobile-dominated. The potential for a world-class city is present, we only need to tap the resource and build off of it. Pikes Peak Avenue was designed to capitalize on the amazing terminated vista of Pikes Peak. Today, the right-of-way is large, as it should be, for the impact of the view. However, the ratio of automobile to pedestrian places is heavily weighted toward the automobile. With the collective brilliance of many Colorado Springs Downtown advocates and the engagement of the Downtown and City leaders, we will demonstrate the immense possibilities on September 21 & September 22 of 2012.
